Dr Kai Brown is an Australian trained doctor who completed his general surgery training and underwent further extensive subspeciality training in liver, pancreas and gallbladder surgery, along with liver transplant. His main areas of expertise are in the treatment of tumours and diseases of the liver, pancreas and gallbladder, as well as hernias of the abdominal wall and groin. He has additional training in robotic and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. When on call Kai will also manage surgical emergencies including traumas and common general surgery emergency presentations such as bowel obstructions or appendicitis.
Whilst Kai was born and grew up in Sydney, he has travelled and worked extensively in regional NSW as well as Victoria and Queensland. He is married with two children and enjoys cycling to stay fit. He is extremely dedicated to his patients and approaches each patient with the care he would like his own family to receive.
Training
& Experience
Kai is a consultant hepatobiliary, pancreatic and general surgeon at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney where he is also the Head of Department of Robotic Surgery, and National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) clinic lead. He is also a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at The University of Sydney Northern Clinical School where he is the coordinator of the Year 2 MD program. Kai is an accredited robotic surgeon using the Da Vinci Xi platform.
Kai graduated from the University of New South Wales with a degree in Medicine and a first-class honours degree in Medical Science. He undertook specialist general surgery training and obtained his Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2019. During this time he also completed a PhD in surgical oncology at the University of Sydney researching colorectal liver metastases, resulting in a number of scholarships, prizes, publications and presentations at the national and international level.
He went on to do a further three years of subspeciality surgical fellowship training in hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) and liver transplant surgery across Australia at Westmead Hospital in Sydney, The Austin Hospital in Melbourne, and Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. He has an ongoing research interest in liver and pancreas cancer, as well as clinical outcomes after complex and minimally invasive surgery.
