What to Expect

Your Initial Consultation

Kai sees both public and private patients in his rooms located at the Tom Reeve Academic Surgical Clinic on the Royal North Shore Hospital campus. Bookings can be made via telephone and urgent referrals can generally be seen within a week. A valid referral from your GP or another specialist will enable you to receive a Medicare rebate to cover a portion of the consultation fee. Patients are encouraged to bring a support person. Initial consultations usually last around 30 minutes.

What to Bring

  • Referral Letter

  • An up-to-date list of medications and allergies

  • Any scans (CT, MRI, ultrasound) or blood tests. When making a booking, please notify reception where your scans were done so Dr Brown can review them prior to your consultation.

  • Medicare card

  • Private insurance details, if relevant

Consultation Fees

The initial consultation fee covers the duration of the appointment itself, as well as reviewing your scans and results outside of consultation, and discussion of your case at a Multidisciplinary Team Meeting if necessary.

Full payment for your consultation is required at the time of your appointment. We accept EFTPOS, VISA, Mastercard and EFT payments. The Medicare rebate will be applied at your visit online and if your bank details are lodged with Medicare, your rebate will be reimbursed into your account in most instances within 24 hours.

On booking a date for surgery, you will be given detailed instructions on how to prepare, what medications to cease, and what to bring. All public patients treated under Medicare incur no cost to be treated in a public hospital. For patients having surgery privately, surgical fees vary depending on the procedure and health fund. The anaesthetist, surgical assistant, and hospital may charge additional independent fees. You will need to contact them directly and provide them with the item numbers listed on your quote to obtain an estimate.

The Day of Surgery

All patients will be regularly reviewed by Kai whilst in hospital. All post-operative patients will be reviewed in the rooms after discharge from hospital. Some patients with cancer or other complex problems may require prolonged follow-up, and Kai cherishes the opportunity to develop long-term patient-doctor relationships.

After Surgery

My Commitment to You

I will endeavour to support you every step of the way. You can expect me to be approachable, honest, and upfront. My goal is to ensure you fully understand your diagnosis and the options available. You and your family can expect to be kept informed with frequent communication from myself and my team. Most of all, you should feel as though you have been cared for with the same empathy and compassion I would expect for my own family.
